6 small changes to save on energy bills

Winter has slowly but surely crept in. Now is the time to take charge of your energy bills and save yourself some money in the process.

You, like many of us, may be simply paying your gas and electricity bills without realising you could actually be saving money. Here are six ways you could save money without changing usage in your home.

1. Read your meters regularly.

Make sure your bills are not based on estimated reading, as these could be higher than the actual reading on your meters.

2. Switch to online bills.

If you have internet access, this alone could save you up to 10%.

3. Avoid prepayment meters.

If you can, try to avoid these as these are more expensive than a billed meter.

4. Communicate.

If you’ve fallen on hard times financially, be sure to let your energy supplier know as soon as possible. They can discuss your options with you and set up a payment plan.

5. Shop around.

Paying for your gas and electricity through one supplier may not always be the cheapest option. Research the cost of other suppliers to make sure you’re getting the best deal. One simple way of doing this is through a price comparison website.

6. Set up a direct debit.

Suppliers are more confident that they’ll receive their payment through direct debit and can offer financial incentives.┬áDoing this could save you an additional 10%
