I’m Hazel, Rooms4U project officer, but in this post I’m going to be writing about In Shape. One of my favourite Einstein quotes is “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” It’s easy to fall into that trap of standing still. Sometimes, making a simple change can make the world of difference. That’s why at Newydd, we’re all about promoting the health and well-being of staff.
The day begins with a cup of tea and a chat about what you did last night. Then someone rocks up with an uber healthy lunch parading it around the office like no one has ever seen a bag of baby leaf salad or a falafel before. That’s the conversation starter! ‘Ooooh, someone’s eating healthy!’ which is swiftly followed by the correct way to pronounce quinoa (its keen-wah!) It’s super awkward as you sound a bit pompous when you correct someone who says it wrong!
My point is, that chat about health and well-being forms part of our everyday conversations with colleagues, friends, family and even strangers. It’s something powerful that’s slowly starting to overtake the mundane chat about the weather. It’s why it’s important for us at Newydd to have a health and well-being group. ‘In Shape’ are responsible for developing initiatives to promote health and well-being of staff. We ensure that staff have access to fresh fruit, encourage them to cycle to work with our pool bike scheme, and can keep fit with activities such as zumba, yoga and a running club.
We watch in delight at each other cycling around the car park in go karts, laugh when we shake our booties in zumba, and celebrate when our footy team return with a win!
We’re there for our colleagues who are having a tough day and are supported to create a work-life balance.
We’re working to develop initiatives that reach staff working out in our communities to ensure that they feel like part of the furniture too. At the end of the day, that’s what it’s about – feeling safe, secure and appreciated in your job.
Now just to get our newbies involved! Fancy yoga? Leotards are available for those who haven’t got suitable attire……
